Holne is mentioned in The Doomsday Book [1086] when the Manor of Holne was given to Sherriff Baldwin de Rivers. It is a village of around 280 souls situated on the south east edge of Dartmoor at about 200 metres above sea level and 4 miles from the stannary town of Ashburton. It lies about a quarter mile south of a deep valley cut by the River Dart as it makes its way down from the high moor towards the sea.

The village is popular with walkers as an excellent stop on the Two Moors Way where a welcome rest, food and accommodation are available. The village has a lively and friendly pub, The Church House Inn, dating from 1329 and a Community Shop and Tea Room. The former school house now hosts the Village Hall. Holne Manor Farm is a working farm in the village. Those with time will enjoy perusing Holne's informal second-hand book shop at Hilltop.
